A Message to Families Regarding a Recent Situation at Quincy High School 

Dear Families, 

We have received questions regarding a recent news article and want to provide our school community with additional context and the information we are able to share. 

Student safety is a core value for us in Quincy schools. We take allegations of misconduct very seriously. Last spring, when a student came forward with concerns about interactions with an instructor, school and district leaders took immediate action. The school district promptly placed the staff member on administrative leave, informed local law enforcement, and engaged an independent third party to conduct an investigation. 

 After a thorough investigation, the district received a report detailing the steps of that investigation and the investigator's findings. The investigator interviewed multiple students and staff members. While there was agreement about the statements that were made, there were differences in the description of the context surrounding those statements.  

We recognize that families may have questions about what occurred, the investigation, and the staff member's return. Because this matter involves both a student and a staff member, the school district has legal obligations to protect student privacy and the confidentiality of personnel matters. As a result, we are limited in the details we can appropriately share, but we can confirm that corrective action was taken. 

We also want to acknowledge that, as a public institution and a learning organization, the Quincy School District is always looking for ways to improve. In this situation, while steps were taken to ensure the student and staff member would not share classes going forward, we recognize that we could have met with the student and family before the start of the school year to communicate those plans more clearly and provide an opportunity for discussion and feedback. We regret that this did not occur and are reviewing our processes to strengthen communication and support for students and families in situations like this.

Un Mensaje para las Familias sobre una Situación Reciente en Quincy High School 

Estimadas familias: 

Hemos recibido algunas preguntas sobre un artículo reciente en las noticias y queremos brindar a nuestra comunidad escolar un poco más de contexto, así como la información que podemos compartir. 

La seguridad de nuestros estudiantes es una prioridad fundamental en las escuelas de Quincy. Tomamos muy en serio cualquier denuncia de conducta inapropiada. La primavera pasada, cuando un estudiante expresó preocupaciones sobre interacciones con un instructor, los líderes de la escuela y del distrito actuaron de inmediato. El empleado fue retirado temporalmente de sus responsabilidades laborales, el distrito escolar notificó a las autoridades locales y contrató a un investigador externo e independiente para realizar una investigación. 

Después de una investigación exhaustiva, el distrito recibió un informe que detallaba el proceso de investigación y los hallazgos del investigador. Durante la investigación se entrevistó a varios estudiantes y miembros del personal. Aunque hubo coincidencia respecto a las declaraciones que se hicieron, existieron diferencias en la manera en que se describió el contexto en el que ocurrieron dichas declaraciones. 

Entendemos que las familias puedan tener preguntas sobre lo sucedido, la investigación y el regreso del miembro del personal. Debido a que este asunto involucra tanto a un estudiante como a un empleado, el distrito escolar tiene la obligación legal de proteger la privacidad del estudiante y la confidencialidad de los asuntos relacionados con el personal. Por esta razón, estamos limitados en los detalles que podemos compartir; sin embargo, podemos confirmar que se tomaron medidas correctivas. 

También queremos reconocer que, como institución pública y organización dedicada al aprendizaje continuo, el Distrito Escolar de Quincy siempre busca oportunidades para mejorar. En esta situación, aunque se tomaron medidas para asegurar que el estudiante y el empleado no compartieran clases en el futuro, reconocemos que pudimos haber tenido una reunión con el estudiante y su familia antes del inicio del año escolar para comunicar esos planes con mayor claridad y brindar una oportunidad para dialogar y recibir comentarios. Lamentamos que eso no haya ocurrido y actualmente estamos revisando nuestros procesos para fortalecer la comunicación y el apoyo a estudiantes y familias en situaciones similares. 

Sobre todo, queremos animar a nuestros estudiantes a hablar con un adulto de confianza siempre que tengan alguna preocupación relacionada con el comportamiento de un estudiante o miembro del personal.
