Profile of a Graduate prepares grads for life after high school

What does it mean to be a graduate of Quincy Schools? Students leave school with more than just a diploma — they carry experiences and memories that shape their values and goals. The new “Profile of a Graduate” being introduced in Quincy Schools is designed to give students and educators goals to work toward while in school, according to Alicen Gaytley, director of teaching and learning for Quincy schools.  

 

“The profile of a graduate captures transferable skills that we want every Quincy graduate to leave with,” Gaytley said. “We are making crystal clear for our students exactly what we expect of them. Instead of assuming students will naturally develop these skills, we’re intentionally teaching them and clearly communicating our expectation.”

 

The profile envisions the ideal outcomes for a graduate. According to the profile, by the time they graduate, students should be able to say “I am a skilled creator,” “I am a collaborator,” “I am a forward-thinker,” and “I am a difference maker.” Each statement has specific goals, like “learn to communicate clearly,” “set goals,” “make responsible choices,” and “lead with kindness.”

 

“We naturally see these competencies and skills in students,” Gaytley said. “When we have a common language for communicating what the skills are that we want our students to develop, it allows us to see it, recognize it, and celebrate it.”

 

Graduate profiles like this one are common in other schools around the state and country, Gaytley said. However, the Quincy Profile of a Graduate was designed by and for the Quincy community. The skills described in the profile were developed by students, staff, community leaders, business partners from multiple sectors, and partners in higher education.  

 

“We knew we had to engage our community in identifying what was most important,” Gaytley said. “This profile basically says, ‘This is what our community has said are things that you really need to focus on and learn when you are in school so when you graduate you are ready for the next step.’"

 

Profile development took over a year, Gaytley said. That time was spent gathering input and making revisions based on the feedback of district leadership, the school board, and student representatives. The profile will begin appearing in classrooms this year.

 

“Part of what our plan is for integrating it into instruction is making it really visible for every student in every classroom,” Gaytley said. “All of the feedback has been positive so far, but the true test will be when we start to really integrate this into our instruction.”

The language in the profile was designed to be clear and actionable — students should be able to understand early on, even before high school, what the expectations are for them by the time they graduate. Then, when they graduate, Gaytley said, they are better prepared to enter the workforce or continue their education knowing they’re achieving goals set by the people they will be working and learning alongside.  

 

“I really appreciate the community here in Quincy and how engaged they are with our district and learning,” Gaytley said. “I really appreciate being able to take their voice into consideration and make sure that we are teaching what they value most.”

El perfil del graduado prepara a los estudiantes para la vida después de la preparatoria

¿Qué significa ser un graduado de las escuelas de Quincy? Los estudiantes salen con mucho más que un diploma: se llevan experiencias y recuerdos que dan forma a sus valores y metas. El nuevo “Perfil del Graduado” que se está implementando en las Escuelas de Quincy busca ofrecer tanto a estudiantes como a educadores metas claras para trabajar mientras están en la escuela, explicó Alicen Gaytley, directora de enseñanza y aprendizaje del Distrito Escolar de Quincy.  

“El perfil del graduado identifica habilidades transferibles que queremos que todos los estudiantes de Quincy desarrollen antes de graduarse,” dijo Gaytley. “Queremos dejar muy claro a nuestros estudiantes qué esperamos de ellos. En lugar de suponer que aprenderán estas habilidades por sí solos, ahora las estamos enseñando de manera intencional y comunicando claramente nuestras expectativas.”  

Este perfil representa lo que se espera que un graduado ideal pueda lograr. Según el documento, al graduarse, los estudiantes deberían poder decir: “Soy una persona creativa,” “Sé trabajar en equipo,” “Pienso en el futuro,” y “Soy alguien que genera un impacto.” Cada una de estas declaraciones incluye metas específicas como: “comunicarme con claridad,” “establecer metas,” “tomar decisiones responsables” y “liderar con amabilidad.”

 “Ya vemos muchas de estas habilidades en nuestros estudiantes,” comentó Gaytley. “Pero cuando usamos un lenguaje común para describirlas, nos permite reconocerlas, reforzarlas y celebrarlas.”  

Perfiles de graduado como este ya son comunes en otras escuelas del estado y del país, señaló Gaytley. Sin embargo, el Perfil del Graduado de Quincy fue diseñado específicamente por y para la comunidad de Quincy. Las habilidades descritas fueron desarrolladas por estudiantes, personal escolar, líderes comunitarios, socios del mundo empresarial y representantes de instituciones de educación superior.  

“Sabíamos que teníamos que involucrar a nuestra comunidad para identificar lo que era realmente importante,” dijo Gaytley. “Este perfil básicamente dice: ‘Esto es lo que nuestra comunidad considera fundamental que los estudiantes aprendan durante su etapa escolar para que, al graduarse, estén listos para el siguiente paso.’”  

El desarrollo del perfil tomó más de un año. Durante ese tiempo se recogieron opiniones y se hicieron ajustes con base en comentarios de líderes del distrito, el Consejo Escolar de Quincy y representantes estudiantiles. El perfil comenzará a verse en los salones de clase este año.  

“Parte de nuestro plan para integrarlo en la enseñanza es hacerlo visible para todos los estudiantes en todas las clases,” explicó Gaytley. “Hasta ahora, todos los comentarios han sido positivos, pero la verdadera prueba será cuando empecemos a aplicarlo de lleno en la instrucción diaria.”  

El lenguaje del perfil fue creado para ser claro y práctico — los estudiantes deben poder entender desde temprana edad, incluso antes de llegar a la preparatoria, lo que se espera de ellos al graduarse. De esta manera, cuando terminen sus estudios, estarán mejor preparados para entrar al mundo laboral o continuar con su educación, sabiendo que están cumpliendo con metas creadas por la misma comunidad con la que trabajarán y aprenderán.  

“Aprecio mucho a la comunidad de Quincy y lo involucrados que están con nuestras escuelas y el aprendizaje,” dijo Gaytley. “Me siento agradecida de poder tomar en cuenta sus opiniones y asegurarme de que estamos enseñando lo que más valoran.”
