Summer Learning Tips

Summer is a great time for children to rest, play, explore, and keep growing as learners. Small daily habits can help your child feel confident and ready for the next school year.
1. Keep a Simple Routine - Set a regular time each day for reading, learning, chores, play, meals, and bedtime. Children feel more confident when they know what to expect.
2. Read Every Day - Encourage your child to read or listen to books for 20 minutes each day. They can read picture books, chapter books, magazines, comics, recipes, or books in any language.https://www.ncwlibraries.org/locations/quincy-public-library/ https://www.readingfoundation.org/readingfoundation/reading-tips
3. Talk About What You Read -
Ask questions like:
- “What was your favorite part?”
- “What did you learn?”
- “What do you think will happen next?”
Talking about books builds understanding, vocabulary, and confidence.
4. Practice Math in Real Life - Use everyday moments for math. Count money, compare prices, measure ingredients, tell time, sort laundry, read calendars, or practice math facts in fun ways.
5. Write for Real Reasons - Invite your child to write grocery lists, letters, stories, journal entries, cards, captions for drawings, or notes to family members. Writing does not have to be long to be meaningful.
6. Limit Screen Time and Balance Activities - Help your child balance screen time with reading, outdoor play, creative activities, chores, and family time. When using screens, choose learning games, audiobooks, or educational videos when possible. Students who bring their Chromebooks home will continue to have access through Clever to apps that support reading, math and typing skills.
7. Encourage Curiosity - Let your child ask questions, explore, build, draw, cook, garden, observe nature, or learn about topics they enjoy. Curiosity helps children become strong thinkers.
8. Keep Healthy Habits - Children learn best when they get enough sleep, eat healthy meals and snacks, drink water, and move their bodies every day.
9. Celebrate Effort - Praise your child for trying, practicing, asking questions, and not giving up. You might say, “I noticed you kept working even when it was hard.”
10. Stay Connected to School and Community Resources - Use summer reading programs, library activities, school resources, parks, community events, and family routines to keep learning active and fun. https://www.ncwlibraries.org/locations/quincy-public-library/
